Supervision Essentials (Supervisory Enhancement Training)

This training program which has myriad variations (see explanation at the bottom) is designed to enhance the skills of first-line supervisors. At the conclusion of training, participants will feel more confident in their role as a supervisor to: set goals, direct daily activities, communicate effectively, integrate new people, manage change, motivate staff, delegate, resolve conflict, coach and counsel toward heightened performance, and deal with personnel challenges.

I. Successfully Integrate New People into your Team or Area
- Motivate and inspire your entire team through words and actions.

- Use the method that fits your environment – weekly meetings or more 10 minute meetings.
V. Email: Ensure your Message is Clear Every Time
- Apply simple rules to ensure your emails will be easily read and comprehended.
- Avoid the Email faux pas that annoy and confuse others.
- Be succinct, clear, and orderly – yet display personalization.
- Avoid words and misspellings that could undermine your professionalism.
VI. Enhance Teamwork
- Understand how and when to pull people aside – defuse early and often.
- Use the “Animal Instincts” Assessment tool to expose the four basic personality styles, yours and theirs.
- Learn different approaches when delegating and cross training depending on the style.
VII. Resolve Conflict by handling Difficult (Toxic) People
- Recognize the signs of potential conflict and intercede before it escalates.
- Understand how and when to pull people aside – defuse early and often.
- Use fantastic conflict-defusing techniques: broken-record, fogging, specific question, acknowledgment, if-then, etc.
- Detoxify the toxic people by using 8 survival strategies.
- Learn to mediate like a pro.
VIII. Coach and Counsel to Enhance Individual Performance
- Use a 10-step coaching model to achieve higher job performance.
- Provide immediate feedback regarding positive and corrective feedback.
- Ask open-ended questions to help create a positive partnership.
- Empower your employees: close any gaps between current and future performance.
- Develop and apply the skills of coaching through case study, role play, and discussion.
- Use a 4-step process every time you discuss performance (performance counseling).
